Franklin was built by the Royal Australian Navy to the Morgan Giles Type 43 design for the Sail Training Craft for the Royal Navy. 

She was built at the Australian Navy Yard at Garden Island, Sydney. Subsequently based at the Royal Australian Navy College, HMAS Cresswell, Jervis Bay NSW.  She took part in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race over a number of years with an Australian Navy crew.

She was passed on to the Australian Army and is now in private hands having undergone refurbishment.
